Ashtanga Yoga – Mysore Classes

The Mysore class is named after Mysore, India, the birthplace of Ashtanga yoga.  Ashtanga yoga was taught there by its founder, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois.  His grandson, Sharath Jois, teaches there today.

In Mysore classes, students follow a set sequence of asanas (postures) and practice at their own pace in the presence of a teacher.  Students learn one asana at a time and are stopped when they are unable to enter the given asana.  Here, the teacher provides assists which teach the student how to safely enter, stay in, and exit the asana.  New postures are only given when the preceding ones have been safely executed.

Ashtanga Yoga – Led Classes

In the led primary series classes, students are guided through the sequence of 42 asanas which comprise the Primary Series of Ashtanga yoga.  The led class is a very important part of the Ashtanga program.  Its purpose is to reinforce the traditional movement, breathing, gazing points and method.

NOT FOR BEGINNERS

Students are invited to the led class only when they have completed the standing sequence.
